Having ssl encryption on a website design is quite important for many reasons, some being that obviously it is more safer to enter in a users password for example on a ssl encrypted website rather than a website without ssl.
SSL encryption is rather cheap, depends where you buy it from of course, but if you are on a tight budget, you might not be able to purchase a paid SSL certificate, So we will take the privelage and show you how its done in an easy step by step guide on getting a free ssl certificate and how to upload the certificate on your website.
First step is to get the certificate from ZeroSSL
When you get to their website, click on start at "FREE SSL CERTIFICATE Wizard"
Enter in your email and domain, then click NEXT
Copy or download the "BEGIN CERTIFICATE REGUEST" and click next
Copy or download the "PRIVATE KEY" and click next
Before you start, you need to have access to your website files, you can either use your hosting cpanel file manager, or you can access your files with a ftp program such as filezilla.
You can download filezilla at filezilla
After downloading filezilla, you need to get your ftp details to login, this is usually displayed on your hosting cpanel, i will include a few links on how to get your ftp details for the top 5 website hosting comapnys.
1.Godaddy-- godaddy ftp details
2.Hostgater-- hostgater ftp details
3.Hostinger-- hostinger ftp details
4.Tsohost-- tsohost ftp details
4.BlueHost-- bluehost ftp details
After you got your ftp login details, you have to enter them into filezilla like so..
After you logged into your website files, you will need to verify your domain.
This can be done by..
firstly, create a folder called .well-known in your webroot(the main folder where your website is at with all the files).
Then inside the .well-known folder create a new folder called acme-challenge
Then inside the acme-challenge folder, create two text files, name the text files with the file names give to you by zero ssl
Inside the text files, copy and paste the text which is located underneath the file name
after following all the steps above, your folder structure should look like this..
and your 2 text files should be inside the acme-challenge folder!
Next, check that your text files have been sucessfully uploaded to your website by clicking the file name in zeroSSl
when you click the file name, it should, take you to the file on your website with the text, it will look like this..
After both files sucessfully confirmed, click next.
Next, copy or download your certificate and private key..
Congrats for getting this far, there is just one last thing to do, which is actually activating/ uploading your ssl certificate that you just recieved.
Firstly, login to your godaddy website hosting, and click "manage" on your website hosting product
Next, click cPanel Admin to go into your hosting cpanel.
Next, in your cpanel, find and click the option SSL/TLS
Next, click the option "install and manage ssl for your site (HTTPS)"
Lastly, choose your domain from the dropdown, paste in your certificate, paste in your private key and click "install certificate"
